Squeaky floors are
caused by movement in the floorboards, usually in relation to the nails
that hold the board down. When glue is not used when building the floor,
steady use will cause the wood to move, slowly pulling the nails out of
the floor joist. As the board gets more room to move the nails lose
their hold on the subfloor. When the subfloor loses it's grip on the
nail as the floor moves, it causes the noise of that slip to resonate
throughout the floor. |

Over the years several
methods and special tools have been devised to stop squeaky floors.
Several of the more popular ideas revolve around the use of screws used
to pull the subfloor back down to the joist. Anyone who has ever done this
can tell you how hard it can be to target a squeak and actually fix the
noise with these methods. This method actually weakens the structure by
the need to drive these screws at an angle through the joist, usually
splitting the joist. If the screws do aim true and catch the subfloor, hopefully
it is pulled down securely. but the hold is only for that small area
where the screw is, not the inch next to it. Then there's the real bad
news, screw tips under your carpet, be careful while barefoot! |

Our system is very
different from the others in many ways. No screws here, we use epoxy
that has been a long proven product in the granite and marble
fabrication industry. Used to seam and fill granite countertops the
product can even be colored to match almost any shade. Epoxy is applied
to both sides of the joist where it meets the subfloor, creating a rock
solid bond that penetrates deep into the wood much like a sealer. Every
inch of your floorjoist is permanently locked into place. Unlike screws
that can destroy the strength of the joists, our epoxy only makes
everything stronger. |

Before a basement
remodel when covering a basement ceiling is a great time to consider
this low cost method of floor squeak elimination and maintenance. There is no need to get new
carpet, tile, vinyl, or hardwood flooring just because the squeaky floor needs worked
on. Many flooring stores will tell you this is the only way, because
they rip out your floor covering and then stab at your joists from above with
hundreds of screws. This method does show the best results by far when
using screws on squeaks. But unless there is a screw in every inch of the floor it
will still move and squeak around the nails that don't have a screw right
next to them. |
